Winner, winner chicken dinner

Well, we have a winner, but they're not getting chicken.  :)  Cheryl Turley of Galesburg had the closest guess on when the baby would arrive.  She even guessed that I would have a boy!  She predicted that I would have a baby boy on May 26 at 8:47 am and that he would weigh 8 lb. 7 oz. and be 19 1/2 inches long.  She was pretty close on everything but the weight.  Jayce David was born on May 28 at 9:41 am.  He weighed 7 lb. 2 oz. and was 19 inches long.  Good guess, Cheryl!  Thanks for playing!  She wins a Classic Stampin' Pad and a package of cardstock in the SU! BLUE color of her choice.

Soon I will be posting some photos of the awesome cards of congratulations that I've been receiving, but first I just have to post a picture of the new arrival himself.DSCF1115  This is Jayce.  Of course, I would love to post about 100 photos of him, but I will refrain.  :)

3 Common Scrapbooking Myths

"When I tell people about what I do, I often hear things like; 'I am not creative at all', 'I just don't have the time' , 'I would love to be able to scrapbook'." Well, I'm here to tell you, if you have the desire to scrapbook, you can make to happen. Read on... three common scrapbooking myths are about to be BUSTED!

Scrapbooking Myth #1: There's no time to scrapbook. Scrapping doesn't require more time than you are willing to commit.  Do you give yourself time for other activities (like exercise or the spa)?  It just requires scheduling. Most retail scrapbooking stores post their scrapbooking times 2 to 3 months in advance, and home-based scrapbooking business owners will likely schedule events further out than that.

Independent consultants offer scrapbooking workshops and events, and will likely have their schedules prepared 4 to 6 months in advance. I have friends who only scrapbook twice a year or so.  Weekend retreat events are great for getting a lot of scrapping accomplished at one time. You know 6 months or so in advance when the next retreat will happen so you can work your calendar around it.  In my experience, busy people get things done - because of planning.  Another option is atttending a monthly scrapbooking work night.  I am planning on hosting these events at my house on the 3rd Thursday of each month for the rest of the year beginning this summer.

Scrapbooking Myth #2: You have to be creative to make a scrapbook style photo album. Putting photos into safe albums is mostly about preserving the memories & stories that the photos represent. Some of my favorite album pages are 'naked'. They lack any stickers or embellishments whatsoever. I love pages like this because they celebrate the memories. Digital scrapbooking and pre-designed layouts make things easier. Just add pictures and your words and you have a beautiful page!  Watch for updates regarding digital scrapbooking in the coming months.

Scrapbooking Myth #3: Scrapbooks are for families with kids. As long as you are taking pictures, kids or no kids, there's plenty to work on! Look at your pictures, aren't they worthy of celebration? It's time to show off your exciting life! Celebrate your everyday, your family and friends. Your story is worth telling and sharing, putting these stories and memories into a safe album is a great way to do this!  Or create an album for other family members - sisters, nieces, parents, etc.   Even pets deserve a book.  Of course, you can always do all inclusive albums of Holiday themes or other special occasions.

Now that you know how to bust these myths, it is time to get started. Find a few pictures and some friends or some help from me to celebrate your memories.

Soft Summer Samples

2009 00548

Here are couple of samples using the current stamp set called Soft Summer from the Occasions Mini Catalog.  This set is awesome becasue of it's versitile style.  It is a 2-step stamping set, so you can layer the detailed and bold images togehter or you can use each one separately to get entirely different effects!

Therapeutic Effects of Scrapbooking...

Scrapbook Update

Companies Focus On Therapeutic Effects of Scrapbooking
As the economic recession leads to a rise in depression (or at least has many people feeling "down"), some scrapbook companies are choosing to focus their marketing efforts on highlighting the therapeutic effects of scrapbooking.

Big Picture Scrapbooking, the site started by Simple Scrapbooks magazine founding editor Stacy Julian which offers online education to scrapbookers, did a survey of their students about how scrapbooking affected them and promoted the results to media outlets. They shared what students said about the positive effect scrapbooking - and BPS classes - had on them:

Where else are you going to find, tucked into scrapbook design medium, a class on choosing joy and gratitude in your life instead of dwelling on the negative things that surround us every day? Where else will you learn secrets that will change the way you view life from top photographers and artists in simple, do-able steps? Big Picture Scrapbooking has changed my philosophy in life. I am learning from amazing women to savor life a little more and capture that in a form that my friends and family can enjoy and learn from for years to come.

Big Picture is also highlighting quotes from student reviews on the front page of their website that reflect the same marketing philosophy - their classes are not only about how to scrapbook, but are uplifting as well:

Stampin' Up! is also focusing marketing effort on the positive effects of scrapbooking. During the month of April, the stamping and scrapbooking direct sales company encouraged people who are stressed by the recession to relieve stress by adopting a new hobby. The company says that it believes that the "scenario of friends crafting together and enjoying a fun hobby may just be the ticket to relieving stress and helping people 'get connected' during these tough economic times."  And Stampin' Up! is offering 3 great specials in May in honor of National Scrapbooking Month.  (Click here to see specials.)

Even those among us who are devoted scrapbookers and have known the help that scrapbooking was getting us through a hard time in the past (the loss of a loved one, for instance) can get pulled away from scrapbooking when we are stressed and other things seem more important. Scrapbooking businesses can do their industry and their customers - and their own individual business - a service by reminding people about the intangible benefits of their hobby.

It's not just about paper and stamps. It's relaxation and comfort, too.

Three Types of Texture

Reported by:  Megan Lock at Craft Critique.

"Before I start the actual review of this product, I would like to say this product is made by Sizzix, but also has different designs supplied through Stampin' Up! The one I've used here is from Stampin' Up, though other designs are available at Michaels, Amazon, or at your local scrapbook store. They retail for about $9.99.

Sizzix Texturz plates are made of hard plastic that is six inches wide--which means it will fit the Cuttlebug. Of course, you can also use the plates with the Big Shot. There are two different designs on either side of the plate. The set I bought came with three plates, therefore there are six designs. It's important to note that these are not entirely like Cuttlebug Embossing folders. There are not a positive and negative sides to reinforce the design. As a result, the impression these plates leave is not as "deep" as the embossing folders. That said, these still offer the ability to add some texture to your paper. In my samples below, I used a die cut flower for my samples and I used three different techniques.

 1. I used this sandwich in the cuttlebug (from the bottom to the top):

-A Plate
-Texturz embossing plate
-Cardstock or Patterned Paper
-Tan Mat (I use the Spellbinders tan mat, clearly I'm not devoted to one company)
-C Plate

2. Using the same sandwich, mist your cardstock or paper with water. I won't judge you if you use your rubber stamp cleaner because it's in a spray bottle, already on your table, calling your name, but I would never do that.

3. Tap your ink pad on the plate and immediately run it through your machine, using the same sandwich as before.

All three techniques will work, it just depends on what you want to do with your project. The first leaves a faint impression, though it shows some soft texture. The second is a little hint if you want a deeper impression. And the third adds a little depth to the texture.

Pros:
  • Durable
  • Numerous designs, and you get many with one purchase
  • Variety of techniques can be used
  • Affordable
  • Compatible with the Cuttlebug and the Big Shot

Cons:
  • Not as deeply etched, if you're accustomed to Cuttlebug folders
  • They're not available at all large chain retails
All in all, this is a quality product that achieves its purpose, regardless of of similar product comparisons. Do you have a set of these? Do you like them? Would you recommend them to another crafter? I'd love to hear from you!"
